RPGs, Collaberation and Kayfabe

I know I looked at a couple of those kinds of heavily structured, rules-intensive games. I didnâ€t think there would be enough interest to get that going, and it seemed it would be too much work to try and keep it alive…

I think Kayfabe has a smart central concept by acknowledging and incorporating the scripted narrative element of wrestling. Players have to collaborate, a little bit like an adventuring party. The actual rules are a lot simpler than most RPGs so I hope it will play out pretty smoothly.

Assuming I play DM there are 3-4 people interested at the moment, so hopefully we can playtest this soon.

OK am pretty happy that the Booking Committee and Locker Room sections of the game would work out. I think the last thing to finalise is the way that taking part in the show generates Heat for your wrestler.

Match Heat - every time you narrate a 1 min move set you get to roll a number of D6 based on your characterâ€s wrestling score (or, if that section of the match was largely non-wrestling cat fighting etc, use the ring psychology score). Every 6 rolled adds to match heat (or, if there are no sixes, every 1 detracts from it).
Trademarks, finisher, and speciality traits modify this. Risking injury also increases match heat by the amount wagered (and as long as you roll 6s on your wrestling roll, no-one gets hurt). The Kayfabe manual also lets you risk heat provided you are doing something exuberant or dramatic - it gives the example of a huge wrestler doing a top rope splash. So I guess any move that tends towards awesome/cheesy, I.e. almost literally unbelievable, counts as wagering heat.

If the total match heat is higher than the character starting heat, you get +1 character heat (more for main events and PPVs)


Skits & Promos - These work off a D6 roll on the Charisma stat. However the manual has these add character heat, so they have the potential to add a lot more heat than a single match. On top of this, the GM can add bonus heat, up to four points based on entertainment/emotion/story progression/character building.

At a glance, Iâ€m worried that skits and promos will be a greater source of Heat than the matches themselves. I am tempted to balance this a little by adding GM bonuses to the +1 Heat you get through matches. I.e. the GM awards bonus Heat to the
-sexiest match on the card
-most exciting match on the card
-most dramatic / story advancing match on the card (none of these are mutually exclusive)

The only way to get the numbers right, though, is to start play testing. I am thinking to maybe run a pilot series with a smaller number of characters. Say, plan for a mini game of four sixty-minute shows.
