Re: Topic: Wrestling?
My family doesn't cares if it is fake or not... they only care that it is for "nacos", Mexican slang equivalent to American rednecks or British chavs

Re: Topic: Wrestling?
Rednecks and Chavs aren't equivalents. I guess maybe you could say chav = thug. Dunno, there are more offensive terms for that sort of thing.
But for pro wrestling, it's generally associated with rednecks in much of the states.

Re: Topic: Wrestling?
Huh. Interesting. I thought Lucha Libre was still a big thing down in Mexico. I mean, CMLL has been around since 1933, the oldest wrestling company in the world, and is still around and going strong, having retaken top dog spot over AAA in the 1990s.
A company, especially a wrestling company, can't last 80 years without a loyal and large fanbase, right?
Which is also funny, because, while Lucha Libre is athletic, and I have seen some great matches from it, ALOT of Lucha matches end up looking so...light...so barely-touching and soft that it looks...well....Fake.
Especially your oh so popular 2/3 fall 6 man elimination tag team matches, in which one team's members will literally be eliminated within 10 seconds of each other, in the order of 1.Pinfall via roll up that lasts over a minute, 2. Submission from some light wristlock style move that looks fake, and 3. Pinfall off of a simple back body drop (swear to god I've seen this one so many times) Often all 3 of these will happen at THE EXACT SAME TIME.
Not to mention the rule of "If (during above tag match) wrestler A leaps over the top rope with a Plancha and lands on Wrestler B, then Wrestler B is eliminated, Unless he is the captain, the captain can only be eliminated through pin or submission."
On a secondary note, is Mil Mascaras really as popular in Mexico as I've heard? Because I'm seriously convinced he's never known how to do anything but walk on his tiptoes and suck his gut in.

Re: Topic: Wrestling?
What you mean?
Lucha Libre IS a big thing. That lots of people like it doesn't means that the elites like it... actually it is exactly the opposite. Lucha Libre and Football (Soccer) are extremely popular and because of that despised by the high and educated classes.
People in different nations react differently to the same thing. Here in Spain pro wrestling (indie of course as there are no companies at all producing it) is seen as some sort of kitsch improvisation theater... it is almost a hipster thing...
Mil Mascaras WAS extremely popular sometime ago.. then he kind off pissed off all the big companies in Mexico and went to work mostly in Japan and on and off events. Newer generations don't really know him...but be careful to judging Mil Mascaras just by what American wrestlers say about him.

Re: Topic: Wrestling?
Yeah, all I heard about Mil was that every American who worked with him thought he was a dick.

And every Japanese wrestler thinks he is awesome...
And every Mexican wrestler thinks he is an awesome dick
So what shall we conclude?
