As a first outing for this rebooted account, I'd like to engage some opponent in a matroom, or something equivalent, with a focus on BJJ, Catch Wrestling, MMA, etc. It can range from actual training (preferably of the character I play but I can do yours even if I'd like further teaching for BJJ.) to an extreme match. Either way, message me if you wanna bite. While I do like femdom and all that, I will do my best to treat any participants equally.

You can pick either Senji or Hiroyuki but I'm …

Yeah don't watch DBZ, you'll die from boredom

Hmm, I guess we probably would want to ease you in to anime, before throwing the really over the top stuff at you. I suggest perhaps Air, or Kanon, or Clannad. Very emotional, nice artwork, nice story

Question about anime? - Page 2 Empty Re: Question about anime?

[quote="Soiuku":2oio8dna]Let's face it: some animes are too heavy to dive right into~

Hay. I resent that. >_<

BUT I forgot about Cowboy Bebop! I guess I forgot it was anime, because I saw it a long time ago with a friend of mine, before I knew what anime was. I understand there's a movie, haven't seen that, but I loved the show! For the most part. Spike is my homeboy. We had a thing. But... ultimately he has a pointy nose and stupid hair, so it didn't work out.

I'll look into Ghost In The Shell and stuff. Movies would be easier than series, I think. I don't have time to take up EVERY interest in the world full time. I'm not like an anime or sci fi vet, but I hold my own. I'm purdy smurt.

Question about anime? - Page 2 Empty Re: Question about anime?

Post by Soiuku Fri Apr 01, 2011 3:48 am

[quote="Bluemouse":2m7pozyx][quote="anegge":2m7pozyx]Soiuku, I don't think your' advice is very well tailored to Bluemouse's potential tastes. I'm pretty sure she's not a teenage boy.

Animation is a pretty broad artform in Japan. Probably even broader than US cinema. "What kind of shows would I like?" is a tough question.

Such a gentleman, anegge. But you'll note, I didn't ask "what would I like" I asked "what's similar to this/these?" It's different. But... kind of the same. Still without any knowledge at all of anime I don't know what to look for and I don't have my bearings. I'd like to not wade through millions of Dragon Ball Z-type things should I decide to put some time into anime watching.

I saw most of an ep of dbz once. I'm still recovering.

In that case, then animes similar to those two would be these:

FLCL:

Bobobo Bo Bobobo
Paranoia Agent
Maria Holic ((In a semi odd way))
Deep Blue (?)

Really not that many IMO~

Ergo Proxy:

Code Geass
Ghost in the Shell
Kiba
Noein ((Odd Style))
Serial Expirements Lain
Dessert Rat (?)
Daphne in the Brillaint Blue

Sorry about the mixup, I misread your post questions~
How is Anegge being a gentleman when they were correcting me?~ @.@"

It's the truth; some animes bend yourmind around a pole fifty times before you get it and REALLY GET IT~

Anime Movies are way too broad a range; start with Miyazaki~

Ghost In the Shell is boring for a few episodes but try Golgo 13 if you think you might like that~

Not enough data; you dun like me much~ :"<

Question about anime? - Page 2 Empty Re: Question about anime?

Post by anegge Fri Apr 01, 2011 3:57 am

[quote="Bluemouse":1qzxzp5u]But you'll note, I didn't ask "what would I like" I asked "what's similar to this/these?".

This is what I hoped you were asking, because I can answer that.

AFAIK there is, unfortunately, nothing like FLCL. The closest anime that I might suggest is Gurren Lagann as others have suggested. The problem is that Gurren Lagann is much closer to a traditional mecha anime, and much of the humor comes from the fact that it satirizes certain anime cliches.

I have never heard of Ergo Proxy, but unless wikipedia is misleading me I would probably also suggest the Ghost in the Shell movie, or if you prefer an episodic series, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.

If your' area of interest is "things that no one in the western world would consider attempting in a visual media", one of my favorite "What the fuck is happening?" anime is Paranoia Agent. It's the story of two police detectives in modern Japan, investigating a series of assaults by a young man on rollerblades. But the more they investigate, the less sense the case makes.

Well everyone will have their suggestions, I'm sure.

NEWS FLASH: the Archergurl who you speaking of is not part of AFW anymore and she's currently working in production for new game titles in Japan. I'm her Canadian friend who she gave her PC due to mines has crashed. She was nice enough to give it to me to help a friend in need. So she got a spared one that she uses for the things I've mention above. BTW, Anegge and Alexandra be sure to check the E-mail adresses carefully. As Archergurl and me aren't the same thing.

Gurren Lagaan doesn't look like it'd be similar to FLCL with respect to the things that I like about FLCL. Hm.

Also, I haven't seen all of FLCL. I will finish it one of these days, but it's something that I do with things that have an effect on me, creatively and stuff. I've watched the first episode like 5 times, the second maybe 3, and I've started the third but not finished it. When I watch it I want to make sure it's in the right setting and that I'm fully able to soak it in and whatnot.

My favorite moment in the show, in the hour that I've seen, is the very end of ep 1, when Naota drinks the 'sour drink'. It's a really simple moment that means nothing in itself but has so much significance. And stuff.

Question about anime? - Page 2 Empty Re: Question about anime?

Post by Hawthorne22 Fri Apr 01, 2011 6:34 am

Okay, okay, stop everything you're doing.

Anime? Here's what you want. I'm skipping the easy recommendations here, your GitSes, your Cowboy Star whatever nonsense. Here's the gold right here.

You want Baccano. Baccano convinced me anime could still be good. 1920s gangsters, alchemists, an elixir of eternal life, over a dozen main characters with intertwining stories with a buildup to two fantastic climaxes at the same time. Fantastic stuff. One of my favorites.

Then, we're going to take it down a notch. You will want to consider Spice and Wolf. It's slow paced, chill shit. A medieval traveling merchant meets a forgotten wolf goddess. Sounds like romance? WELL YOU GUESS WRONG YOU DUMMY. They travel together and talk philosophy and economics. Lots of economics. Great stuff if you like something down to Earth.

Then, we're walking back to the old school stuff. The shit I grew up with and still like. Yes, boys and girls, I'm talking Slayers. Mother. Fucking. Slayers, bitches. There's nothing that comes close. The original, the best. It meanders, it wears out the genre stereotypes it practically sets, but damned if it isn't charming as hell. Lina Inverse is a fantasy sorceress teased for her flat rack, feared for her foul temper, and like any great early anime heroine, downright hated for her penchant for obliterating the entire fucking town when she rolls in to save it, demanding payment for her services, naturally. A wonderful supporting cast of crazy nitwits makes this one an old favorite.

Then I'm going to date myself further. Iria! Filled with 80s cheese, Iria is a young, unproven future bounty hunter who, in a series of six or so episodes, battles a damned tenacious evil space monster, thwarts corporate malfeasance, saves a bunch of orphans, and generally does a lot of awesome stuff. Pure 80s cheese, with the sort of sci-fi that just didn't give a shit if their tech was plausible by today's standards. They'd make a damn fantasy world and abide by ITS rules, not your puny rules.

Forgive my nostalgia-soaked whining, but my tastes for anime are very specific. And, you know what? I don't care what you ask for because I think I know what you want: GOOD anime. These? All pretty good, though I'm not far into Spice and Wolf so it could take a turn for the great or the shit. I dunno, but what I have seen entertained me in the chill calm coffee shop sense.
