That's the nature of competition though. It's not like other sports are gentlemanly. Pro wrestling is showmanship, not competition. I think you would be hard-pressed to find a football team that doesn't buy drinks for the guy that ends the career of the other team's quarterback.

Also, at the risk of further discourse, I'll point out that the snark didn't come until my last post on the matter. If you're counting my assumption that he wasn't a boxer, then I think you're misreading it. He just happened to sound like more of a watcher than a doer, though obviously I didn't read his whole post the first time around. I'm interested in other people who do it, and not so much on famous boxing matches of the 19th century.

Yes, but the entire point and goal of football isn't just "Smash that guy so he can never walk again!", but instead it is, "Work with your team to try to get the stupid ball to the stupid end of the stupid field!"

Boxing/MMA is about two dudes who just beat the shit out of each other. Now seeing as "The Hunger Games/Battle Royale" reality is not upon us, these people chose to get into a sport and a career where they do nothing but beat the shit out people, and then train to beat the shit out of other people. They do this because they honestly like to beat the shit out of and seriously hurt other people.

Personally, I don't think I would want to know the kind of person that would honestly want and dream of a career where he beat the shit out of other people all the time.

Then again, I play Street Fighter Alpha and Street Fighter 3.

As far as I know, those people are the friendliest most lovable bunch in the world, and spend their days petting puppies, cuddling kittens, and making rainbows for children of the world....and then go beat the shit out of people.

Tai, if you're here, you're theoretically writing characters who have come to terms with what you cannot. It would be a lot more satisfying, in my opinion, to get into the mindset of the sort of athlete who learns MMA and engages in gentlemanly combat and man-pretzel bending just to write these characters better. I won't pretend the Wild Card is a particularly inspired character, but at least I find her fun to work with because I am trying to feel out a bit of what would make someone expend such a tremendous amount of effort in pursuit of the lifestyle she leads (With a few dramatic liberties to make her oh so special, of course.). Not like I'm pretending expertise or that I'm writing high art here but I personally find it more helpful to seek understanding of this sort of thing, especially if you're writing characters in practically that same world.

You don't have to get out there and do the sweaty man twist with a bunch of other burly/skinny dudes and learn what really makes it, but there's something about that athletic drive that just... DESERVES to be written about with a certain degree of awe and affection and desire to understand.

Seriously, just go read one, and you will see that the idea of "Tai making MMA fighter" or "Tai Making actual wrestler" or "Tai not being a total jobber" or "Tai knowing anything about fighting in any way/sense or form" ...or basically "Tai making a character who isn't a horrible porn star that nobody wants anything to do with" is a thought that literally fills every member here with laughter.
