In the vibrant and colorful island town of Burano, Italy, Sergio Volta grew up surrounded by picturesque canals and charmingly vibrant houses. The Volta family, known for generations as skilled artisans and lace makers, instilled in young Sergio a deep appreciation for the work that could be done only by a skilled hand and methods steeped in tradition.

As a child, Sergio displayed an insatiable curiosity and an adventurous spirit. His days were filled with exploring the narrow streets of Burano, watching the local fishermen at work, and absorbing the lively atmosphere of the island. Despite the idyllic setting, the Volta family faced financial hardships when machine mass production of the island’s famous lace and a particularly bad cotton harvest left smaller producers of handmade goods in financial trouble. As the only son of his family, Sergio felt a growing responsibility to contribute to their well-being.

Driven by a sense of duty and being a young man of good health, Sergio made a decision to enlist in the Italian military. The journey through training was challenging, but his determination and adaptability allowed him to excel. During his enlistment he became a well-regarded asset quickly, showcasing a combination of physical prowess and strategic thinking that caught the attention of his superiors. Despite the distance between family and friends back home, Sergio found solace in the camaraderie of his fellow soldiers and the discipline of military life for a time.

However, as he embarked on various assignments and deployments, Sergio began to witness the harsh realities of conflict and the toll it took on both soldiers and civilians. The romanticized notions of duty and heroism gave way to a sobering reality, leaving Sergio disenchanted with the military life he had once embraced as a noble pursuit.

It was during a period of leave that Sergio, wandering through a nearby town, stumbled upon a local wrestling event. Drawn to the spectacle of the ring and the theatrical nature of the performances, he felt an immediate connection to the world of professional wrestling. Intrigued by the physicality and the storytelling aspects of the sport, it was like a well-needed taste of forgotten nostalgia of playing back home as a child on a bigger stage. After the show, he followed one of the performers back to a bar and had a long discussion about how the pay was and how one went about becoming a wrestler.

Upon completing his enrollment period of within the military service, Sergio returned to Burano with new aspirations. Eager to find a calling for himself now that his family’s money woes had long since passed he pursued a career in professional wrestling. He would go on to perform under the stage name “Il Fulmine” for a time, but would later rebrand himself into simply “Surge” around the onomatopoeia of aspects of his name.

After a few years spent on the indie scene, he managed to not only pick up something of a protege but also a contract for a prominent Japanese wrestling federation. Figuring it was time to plant his feet for a time, he signed on the dotted line with gusto.

Fun Facts:

Matching Pair: The markings on his cheeks are tattooed on to cover stitching scars he received after being struck in the face by mistake by a piece of heavy machinery and the rims of his ballistic goggles sliced his cheeks.

Quick Study: Sergio likes to wow people with his dance moves. While not formally trained, he has an eidetic memory that helps in quickly learning the steps to just about anything so long as he gets a chance to review them. It was a fun pass time taking requests back while he was in the service... Just don't ask him to do the next big tiktok dance, please.
