Combat Information

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Combat Attitude: No matter the type of fight, Koyuki Sanada gives no quarter and expects none in return. Her goal is nothing short of the complete annihilation of the opposition. She's not looking to score points or edge out a razor-thin decision or settle for a pin. Nope, her sole aim in any martial contest is to make sure that she's the last woman standing in the ring by blood and sweat and blood and blood and more blood. The actual victory condition is often a secondary concern, and the only win she seeks is on her own terms, not the structured ruleset of some archaic sports commission or circus freak wrestling league. Driven by a pathological need for both a violent adrenaline rush and an expression of her martial superiority. Koyuki is committed to any fight 101% -no matter how insignificant or frivolous or lewd- and demands the same from all her opponents.

Despite being a notorious Yakuza Captain, Koyuki's raging narcissism draconian sense of martial honor means that she's generally respectful of the rules as outlined for any given match - so long as it pertains to the continuation of combat. In the event that it doesn't, she will pretend not to see corner stoppages, ignore her opponent tapping, and even intimidate the referee if she feels the fight is being ended early (and in her eyes, it's always early if more than one person is conscious). Koyuki has zero tolerance for quitters of any kind. She sees it as a complete waste of her limited time to come all the way out for a fight only for some numbnut to jeopardize the entire martial experience and tap because of a dislocated shoulder or a broken arm or 'because they have a family to feed' or 'chronic traumatic encephalopathy is a leading disease in retired combat athletes that I would like to avoid.' Yuck. The excuses of entitled westerners. Grow a spine to replace the one you refuse to break.

As far as Koyuki Sanada is concerned, there are only two real outcomes in a fight: win decisively or go out bloody and battered on your shield. Anyone who can do either against her is worthy of her respect. Anyone who can't even manage the latter is a loser barely worthy of contempt.

Koyuki sees herself as the heaven-sent child of martial arts, a prodigy of the fist with no equal. Regrettably, Her confidence in her martial skill is mostly earned - but her planet-sized arrogance often makes her try to engage other martial specialists on their own turf: boxing with boxers, wrestling with wrestlers, throwing down with a judoka, acrobatic kicking against capoeira practitioners, and so on and so forth. Even in an open match where other options are available, her spite drive for martial perfection can and will triumph over good sense. She has a prideful need to showcase that her martial style can beat them at their chosen specialties, that the self-imposed limitation of her own prowess is enough to trounce everything the opposition worked for their entire lives. Often, her arrogance is rewarded against the standard 'good' combat athlete, but against the best of the best in their fields? Her stubbornness means she often takes unneeded damage before she wises up and switches tactics, and sometimes that damage is more than enough to turn the tide in favor of the opposition.

And she wouldn't have it any other way. A life without ramming your thick skull against every perceived threat that so much as glances your way challenging the best on their home turf is a life unlived.

Combat Strategy: Many eastern martial arts preach the zen of water, of its adaptability and formlessness as a guiding philosophy for both war and life - yet so many of them fail to practice what they preach. They have found themselves mired in tradition, trapped in the stylistic limitations of their own dead styles, and passing on martial guidance that sees no reinvention, innovation, or advancement of the style itself. Entire martial bloodlines have been diluted by indolence and complacency, and dojos have become tombs to bury names with weight but no substance - and it is a well-deserved fate, for they draw their beliefs from the hand-me-downs of twisted Chinese philosophies. Dekishi-Ryu, however, has not forgotten the true waters of old Shinto before Buddhism and Taoism poisoned Japan with its foreign venom. Water gives life. Water cleanses. Water cycles into the air and back into the earth below. Water-

Water erodes. Water rots.

Water drowns.

Koyuki's expression of Dekishi-Ryu is exactly that: dragging someone into deep water and holding them down until they drown mind, body, and soul. She strikes hard, strikes fast, and she strikes with the intent to brutalize with each blow. She walks into any arena knowing she's the stronger, faster, and more durable woman, and for anyone that she can't blitz in under a minute, she will drag them into a war of attrition until they're on the verge of exhaustion before going for the kill. Punches, kicks, elbows, knees, standing grappling, foot stomps, nukite hand thrusts, chops, palm strikes, frickin biting - her style often comes across as a trained Japanese martial artist in an all-out brawl, constantly alternating her offenses between traditional Japanese martial moves and a more precise, vicious version of what you would see in a back-alley brawl.

It's easy to surmise that Koyuki is a mere brute coasting on her well-honed physical conditioning and martial training to finish fights. But while she is a zealot and while she can very reckless, she is not tactically stupid. Quite the opposite, in fact. Like its Muromachi-era parent style Koga-Ryu, Dekishi-Ryu's core tenet is misdirection, deception, flexibility, and unpredictability. Like the rainstorm that comes and goes without warning, her true crippling blows remain unseen behind her relentless offense. Her vast array of strikes serves to constantly keep her opponents on their toes - or to lure them into complacency by spamming the same strikes only to pull out something else once they think they have learned acclimated to her sequences. Alternating the timing of her strikes, feigning injuries and exhaustion, constantly switching stances, fake tells, downplaying her strength and speed, verbally assaulting insecurities - Koyuki does not come into a fight without her tricks and she doesn't care a whiff about the moral populism of sportsmanship. All is fair in war and war. In a drawn-out fight with an opponent she cant just beat down, Koyuki gradually adapts to her opponent's combat nuances, while offering as little of her own as possible.

While she prefers a standing fight and going to the ground is never her first, second, or third choice, Koyuki can handle herself well down below. Dekishi-Ryu's repertoire of offensive groundwork consists, fittingly for its drowning motif, primarily of chokes and smothering positional grappling to set up strikes. That being said, Koyuki would much prefer escaping the ground and returning to striking after a brief skirmish. Usually being the operative word, of course. Koyuki can be capricious on how her ego needs to be soothed, and a submission specialist being broken by their own game is just the right balm for it.

Biography:

Personality:

Born into the life of a Yakuza princess, Koyuki embodies a much older, more traditional, much more brutal way of thinking. She a rigid believer in family and clan, and everyone outside those two items are, well, either assets, liabilities, or obstacles. She's an ambitious, hungry young woman who seeks out conquest in both the financial ventures of the Yakuza as well the martial conquests of the arena - and she aims to excel in both of them as she does all things in life. Koyuki is not without honor - but it's an old, pseudo-bushido-like honor where you either meet her standards of excellence and gain her respect or fall to the wayside in mediocrity. She's a brutal, no-nonsense opponent who will ravage and fuck and do whatever it takes to win - but she's no true sadist, and while she enjoys winning (who doesn't >_>), post-match humiliation is often beneath her unless it was dealed to her first during the match.

Koyuki is a staunch Japanese nationalist. She loathes Americans, hates the french, thinks the British talk like cartoons, despise koreans, and has no small amount of opinions of other nationalities. She does, however, think personal merit far triumphs place of birth, and has no problem extending respect to worthy adversaries. Frankly, she doesn't even like the average Japanese all that much. She believes Japan is decades in decline from a powerful militant past, and she earnestly hopes for Japan -and its people- to reclaim their gods-given heritage.

Outside the ring, Koyuki's relatively amicable for a person of her vocation. She's terse, coldly composed, can be a bit snide, and loathes unnecessary small talk for its own sake - but she's not particularly cruel or mean when there's no reason to be. If she has no business with you, well, then she has no business with you.

Facts of Character:

- Despite visual evidence to the contrary, Koyuki doesn't actually smoke or drink much. Her body is a temple, after all, and vice stains its pristine walls. She does it to keep up cultural appearances for her subordinates, peers, and bosses. Her cigarettes are nicotine-free and green tea and she drinks sake.

- Is a staunch Shintoist vegan. How she reconciles the dissonance between her life and her beliefs is anyone's guess.

- The glasses she wears aren't cosmetic outside fights; she's terribly near-sighted, paranoid about contact lenses, and Lasik is not an option.

- Is a martial arts geek to the nth degree. She's an encyclopedia of both common and obscure martial styles, although you'll never get an objective recounting of their histories and nuances out of her, just where they failed.

- Loves Japanese Jazz and Enka

- Quadrilingual; Japanese, Mandarin, Korean, and English. In descending level of competence of course. Her English is shoddy and unpractised. Her Korean is conversational and a necessity owing to the number of ethnic Koreans in the Yakuza. Her Mandarin is surprisingly good and almost completely unaccented... mostly because she hates the Chinese mainlanders that much more than all the other foreigners combined and wants no misunderstanding when it comes to asserting her feelings towards them.

- She won't admit it to anyone, but she adores pokemon. It's one of the few fixtures of pop culture she's consistently kept up with. Sure, it's a morally bankrupt commercially-motivated blight upon reality, but scyther's so adorable! The Pokemon Centre in Nihonbashi has almost four times the audits, several open investigations, and at least one undercover tokyo metro officer planted in its full-time staff because she visits there once per month. Are there drugs in the Totodile plushies, they asked cynically. No, just a little girl's love for her pre-color gameboy.

- Second guilty pleasure: golf. It's a soft hobby that hits right in her happy place.
