Question about anime? Empty Question about anime?

Post by Bluemouse Thu Mar 31, 2011 5:11 am

So, my first exposure to anime was pretty recent. I've only seen a few episodes of a couple different shows, those being FLCL and Ergo Proxy. That's not counting other anime things that I've caught bits of and had no interest in whatsoever >_>

I haven't seen all of it, but I love FLCL to DEATH. It makes me happy. And now Ergo Proxy is a bit of culture shock, so to speak, it's a lot for a neophyte outsider to take in at once. But first, while I enjoy it, Re-l/Lil/Real rocks my world. So awesome. But here's the question part... are there clearly defined genres in anime? Might be a dumb question. And I don't mean 'funny shows' and 'shows with robots' and whatnot. Japan seems to have it's whole culture neatly categorized, so I was wondering what the above would fit into and what else would be similarish.

Eh? Yeah?

Short answer is yes, Anime has distinct genres. If you're asking what FLCL and Ergo Proxy fit into though... that's kinda a hard question. They're both pretty out there in terms of... well everything.

If you liked FLCL you'd like Gurren Lagann though. Same over-the-top-ness and made of pure awesome.

how could you not have seen all of FLCL o.O it's only like 6 episodes. and yes, it is very awesome, one of the greatest anime that have been made.

haha FLCL falls into the GAINAX category of anime. they'll fuck with your brain. I think GAINAX might do gurren lagann as well o.O

are you looking for particular genres or just curious?

Question about anime? Empty Re: Question about anime?

Post by Soiuku Thu Mar 31, 2011 8:29 pm

Yes, yes there are here's a 'short list' ~

3 Pillars:
Shounen: Amazing amounts of catastrophic/armageddon level fighting; while it's not always that strong it usually has characters reaching VERY HIGH POWER LEVELS~
Example: DBZ, Dragonball, YuYu Hakusho, Naruto, Bleach, JoJo's Bizarre Adventures.
Shouju: An overly dramatic style filled to the brim with romance, drama, and implied innuendo's usually. Expect to see it mixed with Magical Girl, Romance, and/or Drama frequently~
Example: Inuyasha, Pretty Angel, Shugo Chara!,Dragon Who, Rosario Vampire.
Comedy: Plain and simple, usually over the top and completely filled with plot-holes, WTF moments and usually some pretty dirty/perverted/raunchy material.
Example: To Love Ru, Mahou Sensei Negima, Love Hina, Bo-Bo-Bo Bo Bobobo~ ((Blah, hard name))

Short List of as many as I can think of:
Shounen
Shouju
Comedy
Drama
Ecchi
Mecha
Action
Adventure
Martial Arts
Science Fiction
Horror
Adult
Mature
Seinen
Josei
Guro
Vuro
Survival
Slice of Life
One-Shot
Fantasy
Fiction
Non-Fiction
Historical Fiction
Historical Non-Fiction
Magical Girl
Magical Boy
Shounen AI
Shouju AI
Yaoi
Yuri
Harem
Survival-Horror
Thriller
Suspense
Mystery

Those are the more common themes you'll run into but there are more still~
I suggest you start out with these animes:
YuYu Hakusho
IGPX
Aria The Animation
Kiba
Gurren Lagan
To Love Ru
Shugo Chara!
Tokyo Mew Mew
Naruto
Bleach
Dragon Ball
Dragon Ball Z
Case Closed
Inuyasha

After those, just start expanding!~ ^^"
Good luck, and have fun!~

Soiuku, I don't think your' advice is very well tailored to Bluemouse's potential tastes. I'm pretty sure she's not a teenage boy.

Animation is a pretty broad artform in Japan. Probably even broader than US cinema. "What kind of shows would I like?" is a tough question.

NEWS FLASH: the Archergurl who you speaking of is not part of AFW anymore and she's currently working in production for new game titles in Japan. I'm her Canadian friend who she gave her PC due to mines has crashed. She was nice enough to give it to me to help a friend in need. So she got a spared one that she uses for the things I've mention above. BTW, Anegge and Alexandra be sure to check the E-mail adresses carefully. As Archergurl and me aren't the same thing.

Anegge, I was giving anime suggestions based on what are considered to be decent starting points; besides that my advice is merely that, and I threw in a fairly decent mix IMHO~

Aria, Shuo Chara! , Tokyo Mew Mew: those three are all shouju's and good starting points, but Mouses gender isn't something I should be expected to know when they don't state on there profile; and guessing won't help. Let's face it: some animes are too heavy to dive right into~

But to adjust to the female gender:

Card Captor Sakura
Special A
Aria ((All Seasons))
Shugo Chara!
Tokyo Mew Mew
Wedding Peach
Daphne in the Brilliaint Blue
IGPX ((This anime is good for anyone))
Maria Holic (?)
Maid Sama
You're Under Arrest!

These should be better suited in that case~

Post by Tatyina Fri Apr 01, 2011 12:56 am

She might not even be asking for the sake of getting into it. She might just be curious.

and there's only one anime that should be on that list. That's Cowboy Bebop. If she doesn't like that one then she need not even bother with the rest. ;P

Bebop . . . the manga is better; just like Trigun ~ :"3
But eh; Bebop was pretty much a Sci-Fi/Romance/Action so it doesn't appeal to everyone~

*Emerges from Abyss*

1st off... FLCL is godly. One of my favs. I Salute you Bluemouse for picking such a good show! ^ ^

FLCL is the most difficult to categorize and hardly any other anime's come close to touching it. (That I know of anyway) It's Surreal Comedy & Science Fiction. But I think you could also consider a 'Slice Of Life' series as well. (imo) Gurren Lagann might be the closest thing to FLCL.

Ergo Proxy seems to fit the bill of 'Cyberpunk' and 'Mystery'. And a Movie by the name of "Ghost In The Shell" might be considered similar to Ergo Proxy. (or the other way around >.>) Another Film with a similar edge, In my opinion would be "Akira". Not exactly mystery or as Cyberpunk as the two i just mentioned but it mastered the whole "Grim & Gritty future" setting and is a kickass film.

*Jumps back into the Abyss*

Such a gentleman, anegge. But you'll note, I didn't ask "what would I like" I asked "what's similar to this/these?" It's different. But... kind of the same. Still without any knowledge at all of anime I don't know what to look for and I don't have my bearings. I'd like to not wade through millions of Dragon Ball Z-type things should I decide to put some time into anime watching.

I saw most of an ep of dbz once. I'm still recovering.
