So, I saw Mad Max: Fury Road last night...

I think car chases in movies have been ruined for me forever now. Holy shit that was a fun ride. @__@

All car chases from now on are required to have a guy on a moving platform rocking out to a flame-spewing guitar.

Haven't had more fun with a movie all year.

i was gonna talk about how people imitate the surface aesthetic of mad max and never quite manage to reach the sheer level of gonzo the series has, but that'd take like eight paragraphs and that's too much effort to put into talking imo

Instead here's a fun observation about Fury Road: it's a comfortable two hours and none of that time, at all, is wasted. No filler, no padding, no scenes where one character has to awkwardly give exposition on stuff while nothing important happens. Everything is constantly moving forward. Convention says you gotta hit a beat every fifteen pages of the script but Fury Road hits a beat in literally every scene and as a result it almost feels like one long, continuous scene and everything feels intuitive, making it really easy to get totally invested in the movie

I walked away from yesterday's screening thinking a lot about this, mostly because the previous day I'd been forced to watch Silent Hill Revelations, in which everybody (especially Jon Snow) speaks entirely in exposition, and way too much of the plot is spent explaining itself, so I basically had a contrast primed and ready to go

anyway Fury Road is Really Fucking Good

I had more mixed feelings about it. I understand that more suspension of disbelief is required than, perhaps, any other movie ever to really enjoy the film properly but I felt like the movie itself wasn't going to allow me to do that and that didn't make the film as enjoyable as it could have been.

I think the film in its own way was its own worst enemy.

I WOULD say, though, see it in the theater if you possibly can. I don't think it's going to translate to the small screen very well. It NEEDS a theater to help Mae its case.

6.5/10 for me.

Anyone who goes into this expecting it to be realistic is gonna be disappointed. But then again, the other 3 Mad Max movies were all just as weird/out there in the same ways Fury Road is. It's basically George Miller exploring a hypothetical world where the entire world has essentially collapsed on itself to the point where people are driven back to primitivism, which in a lot of cases leads to them going batshit crazy, more or less.

The action scenes were beautifully filmed and used very little shaky cam (especially in the chase scenes), and it also used a surprisingly minuscule amount of cgi, which I appreciated a ton. And the little bit that was used actually enhanced the scenes rather than ruin them completely. The music complimented the scenes well. And while none of the performances are exactly likely to get an Oscar nomination, I felt like everyone was convincing in the roles they played.

Some of the scenes in the second act, while well done, didn't carry nearly the amount of fun and excitement as the first and third act, but that's the only complaint I could think of really. I'll definitely be seeing it again soon and buying the blu ray when it comes out.

The series itself was a spin on what sort of outlook the world may be forseen within the Post Apocalypse setting. How the communities, and individuals try to survive against the many challenges the barren wastelands throw at them.

However, what bugs me is Miller didn't appear to explain how it was possible Max Rockatansky was able to drive the Pursuit Special in this film when it was seen destroyed in the Second Film. Many would argue this is a reboot, or an indirect sequel. However George Miller has pointed out in interviews this one is neither and is loosely connected. Regardless, I doubt Max had much time or had a place where he could restore the car to be drivable again. oO;

He said this one is a sequel to the original, set before the second movie, IIRC.

Haven't seen any. Do I need to see any of them to see this one?
