I don't know about the States, but in UK you have to have your car insured before you can drive it. Whether the insurance companies pay out is another thing all together.

Same, you're required to have insurance. The difference would be whether you have collision or liability. If your car has a lien, you are required to have full insurance. If you drive an old beater and it wouldn't be worth doing body work, then you can just get liability.

Why wouldn't the insurance pay, though?

This is just a guess, since I don't know how insurance companies work, but not everything is covered in insurance. Like, umm if you have taken out a life insurance without disclosing you have a heart condition and you die in a car accident the insurance company asshole's can refuse to pay out your insurance because you failed to disclose everything about you, the fact that you died by some other way than the thing you didn't disclose is irrelevant.

Same is with car insurance, for example, your insurance company had a clause in the contract that they won't be required to pay for the damage caused to your car, where the fault of the accident is yours. Etc etc

Well, in this case I got rear ended, and fault is entirely on the other driver, and I have collision. So the insurance company will pay out what the car was worth before the accident, and then I have the real problem of finding a new car without having to spend money I don't have.
